Your comment is right on. That is the thing I never get when it comes to so-called “animal lovers”. And I think it’s ok to say that meat eaters are still ‘killing’ what they’re eating because they are allowing it to occur on their behalf. Aiding and abetting, if you will.

And on a similar vein, vegetarians not making the connection to the cruelty inherent in diary and egg industries. I just kinda want to shake them all a little and ask them, “really?!”

but I digress… :p

At what point does killing something equate to tenderness, compassion or sympathy.

I was talking to someone who was saying that:

“My sense of loving is that to love means to pay a certain kind of attention, to be non-judgmentally aware. I want to learn to encounter animals with that sort of attention, and if I intend to eat them then I want to kill them with that same kind of attention”

To me that sounds like a dangerous pathology of the psyche.

enter ‘the loving, attentive and non-judgmentally aware rapist’. Nice.

I also think that the organic meat industry has made it a lot more difficult for vegans because organic meat is ok, somehow.

I have one gripe, though. Singer’s utilitarianism is not necessarily welfarism. Neither are rights, but they are not the same.

Welfarism principle: animals can be used by humans for whatever purpose humans desire, but animals should be treated “humanely.”

Utilitarian principle: the most good for the most people and the most animals. Utilitarianism is about maximizing worldwide pleasure and reducing suffering. It’s not about rights, but it doesn’t assert that humans have domination over animals.

Rights principle: animals have a right not to be enslaved or classified as property.

And it should be noted that all three philosophies have room for veganism.

Basically our website was designed for my sister in law (Kathi) who is an engaged vegan and converted me at least to become a vegetarian We gave the site to her as a christmas surprise. She wrote the vegan guide that you can find in the right column and created a book with more than 1650 vegan food products and its nutritional values. Maybe we will also translate it into English. Until now, you can use “Product Search” only with German words…
